What is Photonics?
What is Photonics?
Photonics is the science and technology of generating, detecting, and controlling light. Photonics technology is key to many of the things we rely on every day including smartphones, DVD players, cameras, medical instruments, and lighting products. Photonics will power many of the most important innovations of the 21st century.
2015 Was The International Year Of Light
Due to the global importance of photonics technology, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.  To learn more about light, why light matters, and the International Year of Light, visit www.light2015.org.
America’s National Photonics Initiative
The National Photonics Initiative (NPI) in the US is a collaborative alliance among industry, academia and government seeking to raise awareness of photonics and drive US funding and investment in five key photonics-driven fields critical to US competitiveness and national security.  To learn more about the National Photonics Initiative, visit www.lightourfuture.org.
